An Italian job offer quotes your RAL — the gross annual salary. But what lands in your bank account each month is much less. Enter your RAL below and see your monthly net pay instantly, using Italy's 2026 IRPEF brackets, the 9.19% INPS contribution and the employment tax credit.
On a €35,000 RAL in Italy you take home about €1,926 a month on 13 payments. INPS takes 9.19% (€3,217 a year), IRPEF at the 2026 brackets of 23% / 33% / 43% costs about €6,107 after the employment tax credit, and local surtaxes add roughly €636 — leaving about €25,041 a year net.

Italy taxes pay in four layers, and the order matters. First, your employer deducts INPS contributions of about 9.19% of gross pay — pension, unemployment, disability and parental coverage. Those contributions are then subtracted from your income, so IRPEF is charged on RAL minus INPS, not on the full RAL. That single detail saves the average earner hundreds of euros a year, and it is the step most rough online estimates skip. If you are weighing a move between European countries, compare with the Spain salary after-tax calculator or the France gross-to-net calculator — the deduction order differs in every country.
IRPEF itself is progressive. For 2026 the brackets are 23% up to €28,000, 33% from €28,001 to €50,000, and 43% above €50,000 — the middle bracket was cut from 35% to 33% by Law No 199 of 30 December 2025, so older calculators that still show 35% now overstate your tax. Next comes the detrazione per lavoro dipendente, the employment tax credit: €1,955 up to €15,000 of income, tapering down to zero at €50,000. It is why a €20,000 earner keeps a far larger share of gross than the headline 23% rate suggests. Finally, regional surtax (1.23%–3.33%) and municipal surtax (up to 0.9%) are charged on the same taxable base — which is why two identical salaries in Milan and Rome can differ by hundreds of euros a year.
The formula, in order: taxable income = RAL − 9.19% INPS; IRPEF = bracket tax on taxable income − employment credit; net annual = RAL − INPS − IRPEF − local surtax; monthly net = net annual ÷ payments. The 13th salary (tredicesima, usually December) is not a bonus on top of RAL — it is part of it, which is why dividing by 13 or 14 changes your monthly figure but not your annual net.

RAL (Retribuzione Annua Lorda) is your gross annual salary agreed with your employer, before INPS social contributions, IRPEF income tax and regional/municipal surtaxes are deducted. It is the headline number in Italian job offers.
For 2026 the IRPEF brackets are 23% on taxable income up to €28,000, 33% from €28,001 to €50,000, and 43% above €50,000. The middle bracket was cut from 35% to 33% by Law No 199 of 30 December 2025.
The standard employee INPS contribution is about 9.19% of gross pay for most private-sector employees. It funds pension, unemployment, disability and maternity/paternity coverage, and it reduces the taxable base for IRPEF.
Most Italian contracts pay 13 monthly salaries (the 13th, tredicesima, usually in December); some sectors pay 14 (an extra payment in June). The RAL is the same either way — it is simply divided by 13 or 14 — so your monthly net is lower on 14 payments but your annual net is the same.
On top of IRPEF, regions charge a surtax of roughly 1.23% to 3.33% and municipalities up to about 0.9%, depending on where you live. Lombardy is around 1.73% regional in total effect for many earners, while Lazio is higher — this calculator lets you enter your combined local rate.
It is the employment tax credit that reduces IRPEF for employees: €1,955 up to €15,000 of income, tapering down to zero at €50,000. It is why lower earners keep a much larger share of their RAL than the headline brackets suggest.
No — it is an estimate. Your real payslip also reflects your CCNL contract terms, family deductions, fringe benefits, TFR accrual and the exact regional/municipal rates of your comune of residence. Use it to compare offers, then check your busta paga for the exact figure.
