MixKhazana · Quick answer

Sweden's tax is two layers: municipal tax from the first krona, plus 20% state tax only above SEK 643,000. Your municipality's rate is the number that matters most — it swings your net pay by tens of thousands of kronor a year. The calculator below shows both layers instantly.

Estimate only — not tax advice. Simplified 2026 model: municipal rate applied to gross pay, 20% state tax above SEK 660,400 gross (under 66) or SEK 760,500 (66+). It omits the grundavdrag basic deduction and the jobbskatteavdrag earned-income credit, so real net pay is usually higher; church fees excluded. Verify with Skatteverket.

How it works

Swedish income tax has two layers, and that is the whole system. Layer one: municipal tax (kommunalskatt). Every municipality and region sets its own flat rate, and you pay it from the first krona of taxable income. The national average for 2026 is 32.38%, ranging from 28.93% in Österåker to 35.65% in Dorotea, according to Statistics Sweden (SCB). Stockholm charges 30.55%, Gothenburg 32.60% and Malmö 32.42% — so where you live moves your net pay by thousands of kronor a year. Compare Denmark's salary tax if you are weighing Nordic job offers.

Layer two: state tax (statlig inkomstskatt). Only high earners meet it: a flat extra 20% on taxable income above SEK 643,000, which works out to roughly SEK 660,400 of gross salary for under-66s once the basic deduction is counted. Below that line you pay municipal tax only; above it, every extra krona is taxed at roughly 52% at the national average rate. Only about 15% of Swedish taxpayers reach the state-tax line at all.

The honest simplification: this calculator applies your municipal rate to gross pay and adds 20% state tax above the threshold. It leaves out the basic deduction (grundavdrag) and the earned-income tax credit (jobbskatteavdrag, worth up to about SEK 52,400 a year), so your real net pay is usually higher than the figure shown — treat the result as a cautious estimate, not a payslip. Church fees and employer social fees are not included either. If you are moving to Sweden, also read the expat banking side: best bank accounts in Sweden for expats on ExpatMoneyEU.

Worked example

Elin, 34, earns SEK 540,000 a year in Gothenburg (municipal rate 32.60%) in 2026:

  • Municipal tax: 32.60% × SEK 540,000 = SEK 176,040
  • State tax: SEK 0 — her salary is below the SEK 660,400 gross threshold
  • Net pay: SEK 363,960/year — SEK 30,330/month, about 67.4% of gross

Now give Elin a promotion to SEK 900,000: municipal tax becomes SEK 293,400 at 32.60%, and state tax adds 20% × (SEK 900,000 − SEK 660,400) = SEK 47,920. Total tax SEK 341,320, net SEK 558,680/year — SEK 46,557/month. Notice the top slice is taxed at 52.60%, yet her overall rate is only 37.9%: marginal rates always look scarier than the average. Answer block: Sweden's 2026 tax in one paragraph

Sweden taxes employment income at a municipal rate averaging 32.38% in 2026 (Statistics Sweden, SCB), plus a 20% state tax only on taxable income above SEK 643,000. The Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) pre-fills most employees' tax returns, and the filing deadline falls in early May. Because the municipal rate is flat within each municipality, two people on the same salary in different towns keep different amounts — the gap between the cheapest and priciest municipality is nearly 7 percentage points, worth about SEK 36,300 a year on a SEK 540,000 salary.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a SEK 540,000 salary after tax in Sweden in 2026?

At the 32.38% national average municipal rate, a SEK 540,000 gross salary leaves about SEK 365,148 a year — SEK 30,429 a month — before the basic deduction and earned-income tax credit, which raise real net pay further. No state tax applies at this level. Enter your own municipality's rate in the calculator above for a personal figure.

What is municipal tax (kommunalskatt) in Sweden?

Municipal tax is the flat local income tax set by your municipality and region, funding schools, elderly care, healthcare and public transport. It applies from the first krona of taxable income and averages 32.38% in 2026, ranging from 28.93% in Österåker to 35.65% in Dorotea.

When does Sweden's 20% state tax start?

State tax starts on taxable income above SEK 643,000 in 2026, which is roughly SEK 660,400 of gross salary for under-66s (about SEK 760,500 for over-66s). Only the income above the line pays the extra 20%; everything below it is taxed at the municipal rate only.

Why is my real Swedish net pay higher than this calculator shows?

Because the calculator deliberately leaves out two reliefs: the basic deduction (grundavdrag, SEK 17,400–45,600 depending on income) and the earned-income tax credit (jobbskatteavdrag, up to about SEK 52,400 a year). Together they cut real tax by tens of thousands of kronor, so treat this result as a cautious floor, not a payslip.

Does it matter which Swedish city I live in for tax?

Yes — a lot. On a SEK 540,000 salary, Österåker's 28.93% rate costs SEK 156,222 in municipal tax while Dorotea's 35.65% costs SEK 192,510 — a SEK 36,288 yearly difference for the same job. Stockholm (30.55%) is cheaper than Gothenburg (32.60%) or Malmö (32.42%).

Do I pay church tax in Sweden?

Only if you are a member of the Church of Sweden or another registered faith community that collects through the tax system — typically around 1% extra, and it is not included in this calculator. You can leave the church to stop the fee, which is a formal one-step process with Skatteverket.

What official sources are the 2026 Sweden figures based on?

The 32.38% average and the 28.93%–35.65% range come from Statistics Sweden (SCB) local tax rates for 2026, and the 20% state tax above SEK 643,000 of taxable income is the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) rule for 2026. This page is an estimate only — not tax advice.
