A $1,200 purchase in Miami-Dade, Florida costs $1,284 in total โ $72 state tax plus $12 county surtax at a 7% combined rate. Enter your own price and county below.
The $5,000 surtax cap is the detail every simple calculator gets wrong. Florida's county surtax stops at the first $5,000 of a single item, so a big purchase is taxed at less than the headline combined rate. This calculator applies the cap correctly, in both directions.

Florida sales tax has two layers. The state rate is 6% on most taxable goods, applied to the full price. On top, each county may levy a discretionary sales surtax โ 0% in Citrus and Collier, 0.5% in Orange and Palm Beach, 1% in Miami-Dade, Broward and Pinellas, 1.5% in Hillsborough, Duval and Leon, and 2% in Hamilton โ giving combined rates from 6% to 8% (Florida Department of Revenue, Form DR-15DSS, 2026). The trap is the cap: the surtax applies only to the first $5,000 of a single item, while the state tax has no cap. So the formula is total = price + 6% ร price + surtax% ร min(price, $5,000). Reverse mode inverts it: if the total implies a price under $5,000, price = total รท (1.06 + surtax%); otherwise price = (total โ $5,000 ร surtax%) รท 1.06.
The quotable figure: Florida's average combined rate after local surtaxes is about 6.65%, well below the national picture, because the state rate is a flat 6% and many counties add only 0.5โ1% (Florida Department of Revenue 2026 surtax data). Two purchases show why the cap matters:
Note the destination rule: if that furniture is delivered to a different county than the store, the delivery county's surtax applies โ worth checking before a large order.
| County | Combined rate |
|---|---|
| State base (all counties) | 6.0% |
| Miami-Dade / Broward / Pinellas | 7.0% |
| Orange (Orlando) / Palm Beach | 6.5% |
| Hillsborough (Tampa) / Duval / Leon | 7.5% |
| Citrus / Collier (no surtax) | 6.0% |
| Hamilton (highest) | 8.0% |
In Miami-Dade County, a $1,200 item costs $1,284 in total: 6% state tax ($72) plus a 1% county surtax ($12), for $84 of tax at a 7% combined rate. Pick your own county in the calculator above for the rate where the item is delivered.
Florida's statewide sales tax rate is 6% on most taxable goods and services. Counties may add a discretionary surtax, so the combined rate you actually pay runs from 6% to 8% depending on the county โ 7% in Miami-Dade and Broward, 6.5% in Orange County, 7.5% in Hillsborough and Duval, and 8% in Hamilton County.
Florida law applies the discretionary sales surtax only to the first $5,000 of a single item of tangible personal property. On an $8,000 item in Hillsborough County, the 1.5% surtax applies to $5,000 (just $75), while the 6% state tax applies to the full $8,000 ($480) โ total tax $555, not 7.5% of $8,000.
Reverse mode starts from a tax-inclusive total and works back to the pre-tax price. A $1,284 total in Miami-Dade at 7% means a pre-tax price of $1,200. It is the mode to use when a receipt shows only the total and you need the price before tax.
Citrus and Collier counties levy no discretionary surtax, so purchases there are taxed at the 6% state rate only. Most other counties add between 0.5% and 1.5%, and Hamilton County is the outlier at 2%.
Most unprepared groceries and prescription medicines are exempt from Florida sales tax, while prepared food, restaurant meals, candy, soft drinks and most retail goods are taxable. Exemptions are category-specific, so this calculator assumes a taxable item.
Florida uses destination-based sourcing for delivered goods: the surtax is the rate of the county where the item is delivered, not where the seller sits. For an item picked up in store, the store's county rate applies.
The 6% state rate and the county surtax rates come from the Florida Department of Revenue, including Form DR-15DSS, Discretionary Sales Surtax Information for calendar year 2026. Surtax rates can change each January 1, so verify your county's current rate before a large purchase.
