In short: SEPA = one euro payments zone across 36 countries — send euros abroad as easily as at home. Check your IBAN free →

How SEPA works

Before SEPA, each country had its own account-number formats and transfer rules, so paying a supplier abroad meant special forms, high fees and long waits. SEPA standardized everything around two identifiers — the IBAN (and, for businesses, the BIC) — and three payment instruments:

  • 💸 SEPA Credit Transfer (SCT) — the classic bank transfer; arrives within one business day
  • 🔁 SEPA Direct Debit (SDD) — pull payments for recurring bills (utilities, subscriptions, gym memberships)
  • ⚡ SEPA Instant (SCT Inst) — money lands in under 10 seconds, 24/7/365, increasingly the default

Since 2016, EU banks may not ask consumers for the BIC on SEPA payments — the IBAN alone must suffice ("IBAN-only rule").

Who's in the zone?

All 27 EU member states, plus the United Kingdom, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City and Andorra — 36 countries total. Note the subtlety: non-euro EU members like Sweden and Poland are in SEPA, but only euro-denominated transfers get the SEPA treatment.

What SEPA costs

EU regulation caps the price: a cross-border euro transfer cannot cost more than a domestic one. In practice most banks charge €0 for standard SEPA transfers within online banking — one reason fintechs built their European products on top of it.
