In short: APR = the true yearly cost of borrowing, including interest plus mandatory fees, expressed as a percentage. Lower APR = cheaper loan, all else equal. Try our free loan calculator โ†’

APR vs interest rate: why the headline lies

The nominal (headline) interest rate is only the price of the money itself. But real loans come with extras: arrangement fees, account-keeping charges, mandatory insurance. The APR rolls all compulsory costs into one annualised percentage, which is why it is the only fair way to compare offers.

Watch outTwo "5%" loans can cost very different amountsOptional extras (like voluntary insurance) may sit outside it

How APR is calculated: a worked example

Take a โ‚ฌ10,000 loan over 3 years at 5% nominal interest with a โ‚ฌ200 arrangement fee:

  • Monthly payment at 5% nominal: โ‚ฌ299.71 ร— 36 months = โ‚ฌ10,789.56
  • Plus the โ‚ฌ200 fee: total repaid = โ‚ฌ10,989.56
  • Spread over the year with the fee included, the true annual cost โ€” the APR โ€” comes out at about 6.5%, not 5%

That 1.5-point gap is exactly what APR exists to reveal: the fee quietly made the loan a third more expensive in rate terms. Without APR, you'd never see it in the headline.

APR in the EU: lenders must show it

Under EU consumer-credit rules, lenders must display the APR prominently โ€” in adverts and in the standard pre-contract information โ€” before you sign. You'll meet it under local names: TAEG in France and Italy, effektiver Jahreszins in Germany, TAE in Spain. Different acronym, same idea: one comparable number everywhere in Europe.

The APR must be calculated on a representative example (a typical loan amount and term), so when adverts say "3.9% APR representative", that is the rate at least 51% of successful applicants can expect โ€” your personal offer may differ based on creditworthiness.

APR vs APY (AER): don't mix them up

APR is about borrowing โ€” what a loan costs you. APY (annual percentage yield, called AER in much of Europe) is about saving โ€” what a deposit earns you including compounding. They look similar but point in opposite directions: you want the lowest APR on loans and the highest APY/AER on savings.

โ“ APR FAQs

What is the difference between APR and interest rate?

The interest rate (nominal rate) is only the cost of the money itself. APR adds mandatory fees and annualises everything, showing the loan's true yearly cost.

Is a lower APR always the better loan?

Usually, but compare like with like: same term, same type. Watch for variable rates that can rise later and fees charged outside the APR, like optional insurance.

Can my APR change after I sign?

On a fixed-rate loan, no โ€” it's locked in. On a variable-rate loan, the advertised APR is only representative; your real cost moves with the reference rate.

What is a good APR for a personal loan in Europe?

It varies by country, term and credit profile, but roughly: single-digit APRs are competitive for strong profiles, while deep double digits deserve serious comparison shopping.

Is a 0% APR offer really free?

The interest can genuinely be zero, but read the fine print โ€” arrangement fees, compulsory insurance or late-payment penalties can still make it costly.

Where do I find the APR on a loan offer?

EU law requires it to be shown clearly in advertising and in the pre-contract information pack, so you should see it before signing anything.
