London: the grandest fireworks, the most orderly system
London's display is the most spectacular of the three and the most managed. The Mayor of London's fireworks are fired over the Thames at midnight from the London Eye and nearby barges, and the official viewing areas around that stretch of river are ticketed, gated and published in full: six areas — Blue, Red, Pink, Green, White and the accessible Orange area — each with its own gate and entry window from 8:00pm to 10:30pm. Paris: the freest night, the most romantic city
Paris asks nothing at midnight except that you turn up early. The official celebration on the Champs-Élysées is free and open to the public: the avenue opens from 7pm, closed to traffic, and the night builds to a video-mapping show on the Arc de Triomphe, a countdown and fireworks at midnight — with public transport free across Île-de-France from 5pm on 31 December to noon on 1 January. New York: the most famous countdown on earth
Nothing else on this page is watched by a billion people. The Times Square ball drop is free to stand in — no ticket, first-come, first-served — but the price is time: viewing pens open at 3pm, entered at 45th, 49th, 52nd and 56th Streets from Sixth or Eighth Avenue, and once you enter a pen you cannot leave and return.
