Title watch: Antonelli's first championship point

Andrea Kimi Antonelli arrives in Austin as the runaway leader of the 2026 drivers' championship โ€” and the mathematics say the United States Grand Prix is his first chance to seal the world title. After a season defined by Formula 1's major regulation overhaul, the young Mercedes driver has built a gap his rivals are running out of races to close.

Storyline 1 ยท The coronation?
Max Verstappen won the previous round in Singapore for Red Bull and remains the benchmark on pure pace โ€” but Antonelli only needs the numbers to fall his way in Texas. Expect every session to be framed around one question: does the title fight survive Austin, or does the championship end under the COTA floodlights?

Verstappen vs history at COTA

No discussion of Austin is complete without the Circuit of the Americas record book. Lewis Hamilton has won here five times (2012, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017) โ€” more than anyone โ€” while Verstappen has four COTA victories including last year's 2025 race, where he beat Lando Norris and Charles Leclerc. Another win would draw him level with Hamilton's tally at this track.

Storyline 2 ยท New-rules pecking order
2026's regulation reset was supposed to shuffle the pack, and Austin โ€” with its mix of high-speed esses, heavy braking zones and long straights โ€” is the sternest examination of which teams truly understood the new rulebook. Watch the long-run pace in Friday practice: it has decided this race more than once.

The circuit: why COTA delivers

The Circuit of the Americas has hosted the US Grand Prix every year since 2012 (except 2020). Its signature is the blind, uphill charge to Turn 1 โ€” a 250-metre climb from the grid wide enough for three cars, where races are so often decided before the first lap is done. Then come the flowing esses of Turns 3โ€“6 (echoing Silverstone's Maggotts-Becketts), the stadium section of Turns 12โ€“15 inspired by Hockenheim, and the long back straight into heavy braking. Off track, the 251-foot observation tower gives a 360-degree view of the circuit and the Austin skyline.

Festival atmosphere, record crowd

Austin treats its Grand Prix like a festival: headline concerts across the weekend feature Post Malone, Maroon 5 and Alesso, with access included in race tickets. Race promoter Bobby Epstein says the event is on pace for a record crowd despite the new regulations โ€” last year's official weekend attendance topped 400,000, and road improvements could add 15,000โ€“30,000 more fans per day. Expect pleasantly warm October weather around 22โ€“27ยฐC, though Texas humidity can make it feel hotter in the grandstands.

Storyline 3 ยท Triple-header begins
Austin opens the Americas triple-header: Mexico City follows on 1 November, then Sรฃo Paulo on 8 November. Three races, three time zones, zero margin for error โ€” whoever leaves this stretch strongest likely decides both championships.
