The grid: how Saturday set up Sunday
Max Verstappen was untouchable in qualifying — 1:31.373, his 50th career pole, just 0.054s clear of Charles Leclerc. Lewis Hamilton starts P3, and championship leader Kimi Antonelli lines up P4 after finishing fourth in the sprint.
Saturday was pure Marina Bay chaos: Verstappen won the sprint after George Russell crashed out from the lead on lap 1, and a Norris–Piastri collision reshuffled the midfield. Russell takes a new power unit and starts from the back of the grid, joined there by Hadjar after an engine change. From P1 to the back row in 24 hours — only in Singapore.
Championship picture before lights out
| Pos | Driver | Points | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | ANT — Antonelli | 325 | — |
| 2 | RUS — Russell | 236 | -89 |
| 3 | HAM — Hamilton | 221 | -104 |
| 4 | LEC — Leclerc | 197 | -128 |
| 5 | VER — Verstappen | 196 | -129 |
| 6 | NOR — Norris | 189 | -136 |
Antonelli's lead grew to 89 points after the sprint — but with 8 rounds still to run after Singapore, nothing is settled. A Verstappen win with Antonelli off the podium would cut the gap meaningfully; an Antonelli podium with Russell scoreless (likely, from the back) would start to look decisive.
Strategy: why Singapore is a lottery
- The safety car is almost guaranteed. Marina Bay's walls punish the smallest mistake, and the field bunches up — a well-timed stop under yellow can win or ruin a race.
- Track position is king. Overtaking is brutally hard here; qualifying pace usually converts. That favours Verstappen and Leclerc — and makes Hamilton's P3 extremely valuable.
- Heat and humidity. Drivers lose kilos in the cockpit; tyre management in the final stint separates winners from survivors.
- The Russell factor. Starting last with a fresh power unit, Russell will run an aggressive alternate strategy — expect an early long stint and a late charge. Chaos agent, officially.
Our prediction
Verstappen to win from pole — his Saturday pace was ominous, and Marina Bay rewards track position. Leclerc P2, Hamilton P3 in a damage-limitation drive that keeps his title hopes alive. Antonelli P4: solid points, lead trimmed slightly but intact. Russell to fight into the points from the back — P8 or P9 if the safety car smiles on him.
The bold call: at least one safety car in the final 15 laps turns the top three on its head. Don't blink.
