1. The 4-week countdown
Breaking party prep into weekly stages is the single biggest thing that prevents last-minute panic. Today is 4 October — right on schedule for a 31 October party.
Week 1 — now (4–10 Oct): theme & guests
- Pick your theme (classic horror, retro 80s, haunted forest, vampire ball…)
- Write the guest list and send digital invites (free on WhatsApp — save the paper)
- Set your budget (see the € plan below)
- Check what decor you already own from last year
Week 2 (11–17 Oct): costumes & decor
- Buy or DIY costumes — thrift stores (Oxfam, Humana, Kiloshop) are goldmines
- Order decor online (Amazon.de / .fr / .es need 5–7 days) and hit Action/Tedi/Flying Tiger
- Plan the menu: 4–5 snacks + 1 signature "bloody" drink keeps it simple
- Make the spooky playlist (or grab a ready Halloween playlist on Spotify)
Week 3 (18–24 Oct): food & finishing touches
- Buy drinks, snacks and candy in bulk — supermarkets start discounting mid-October
- Test your signature drink and one batch of spooky snacks
- Print or prepare the party games (costume contest ballot, murder mystery, trivia)
- Charge the Bluetooth speaker, buy batteries for LED candles
Week 4 — party week (25–31 Oct)
- Day before: decorate the main room, set the table, prep snacks that keep
- Party day: fresh snacks, ice, final lighting check — doors open 30 min after you're "ready"
- Day after: one box for reusable decor, bin bags for the rest, and photos sorted!

3. The essentials checklist
👻 Invitations
Digital invites on WhatsApp or a free e-card site — set the theme, dress code, start time and what guests should bring.
🕸️ Decorations
Prioritise the entryway and the main room: string lights (orange/purple), spider webs, one statement piece (inflatable pumpkin or skeleton), LED candles — real candles near costumes are a fire risk.
🍬 Food & drinks
4–5 finger foods (mummy hot-dogs, pumpkin hummus, "bloody" punch) beat a full dinner. Label allergens — nuts and gluten are the usual suspects.
🧛 Costumes
DIY beats bought: a black outfit + cape = vampire; face paint = anything. Add a costume contest with a silly prize to get everyone in the spirit.
🎶 Music & games
One spooky playlist + one party game (costume vote, Halloween trivia, murder mystery in a box). Two activities are plenty.
📸 Photo corner
A dark sheet, two props on sticks and your phone — instant memory-maker for almost €0.

4. Halloween in Europe: what to expect
Halloween keeps growing across Europe — but it looks different from the US version. Themed house parties, bar nights and costume events are the norm, especially among students and young families. Trick-or-treating is patchy outside the UK and Ireland, so if you have kids, host the fun yourself: a home party with games beats wandering dark streets.
Good news: you don't need American imports. European discount chains now stock full Halloween ranges every October — Action and Tedi from €1, Flying Tiger's design-led pieces, plus IKEA and H&M Home for the "spooky but stylish" look. Order online early: Amazon's country stores deliver in 5–7 days, and popular items sell out in the last week.
5. Safety notes (2 minutes, worth it)
- LED candles only near costumes, curtains and kids — never real flames.
- Keep walkways clear of cables and decorations; tape down rugs.
- If kids attend, check candy for allergens and keep face paint hypoallergenic.
- Drivers: arrange taxis or a designated driver — European cities run night buses and trams on the 31st.
